As of Friday, the number had grown to at least 12 and was at the epicenter of U. S. government, with both the FBI and Congress investigating possible connections.”

The answer is complicated, because there are several government operated locations where they have been transported to. Some are deceased and some are not, but confined to accomplish specific very classified work.

There are at least three biospheres on the dark side of the moon where scientists are working. A few years ago, one of those exploded, killing all workers inside. Years of research was lost.

Area 51: this  secretive area of research has expanded its underground facilities, but it also has established satellite facilities with support scientific teams sequestered there.

These satellite areas include an above ground laboratory in the Colorado mountains outside of Denver.

In addition, there is an underground facility as part of a subterranean city in Maryland and one under Colorado Springs.

There is an above ground facility in Alaska near Anchorage, and one near Whitefish, Montana. The one in Montauk, has been in use for many years.

Each of these satellite locations have a highly classified area of focus of scientific research and some scientists with specific expertise were forcibly moved there. A large part of the team of scientists working on Mars, recently perished due to a global catastrophe.
