We Cling to Comparisons

Kivanu — The Nature of Comparisons

We cling to comparisons like luggage that we drag behind us through life, because we think it gives meaning, clarity, understanding. How do we know if we are good at something, if we cannot compare it to someone else who is not as good? How do we know if we are inefficient, unless we compare ourself to somebody else who is more efficient? How do we know whether we are strong, big, desirable, pretty… All these things are gauged very incorrectly by external mirrors — for mirrors mirror backwards.
