This is a clear example of the law of compensation at work; when one thing is taken away, another is added. Whenever something in our outer reality is reduced, something in our inner reality is increased.
This is also the reason why spiritual masters, at a time of seeking to explore inner space, become very reclusive and withdraw from outer activity.
