Reflections on Friendship
From: Alchemy of the One
In friends we find ourselves. Yet are we not equally in all? Does the rose not unfold in our bosom and the migration of birds course through our veins? How then do we choose which reflection of our soul to embrace? Is it that which we deny within ourselves? For if that is so, we would seek to bind another in friendship merely to complete our own expression of the song of the One Life.
Many choose friendship because of history that has been mutually shared, or loyalty born of old contracts of support. To do so is to live according to the images of the dreams that haunted the night when you rise with the morning sun.
Seeking yourself in the similarities of others binds you both to the mediocrity of sameness. Uniformity stifles growth and is the death knell of greatness. It binds not only yourself, but another by the bands of your selective affirmation. Friendship has become fettered by expectations and unspoken contracts. The freedom of a butterfly is forfeited for the feeling of community experienced by the ant.
Let friendship be for inspiration and delight, whether for a moment or eternity. We are travelers on life's journey and in our unfolding, never the same. That which feeds the soul one moment may not do so the next. Do not bind fellow travelers with whom you have shared a portion of the road when your destination leads you on another path.
Should it so be that another moves forward with you in the spontaneous unfoldment of your life, let it be with a joyous pas de deux that moves in common devotion to the Song of Life. Let our prayer of friendship be that it unfold with impeccable timing and that we embrace transiency as the nature of the delightful illusion of relationship. Let us rest secure in the permanency of the One Life, expressing as the many.
