I've experienced this. I was so in shock by the realization when I researched who these items had belonged to. I still have a couple of non-magical items but I must part ways with them now. I put them away and forgot about them because I was so shocked by the implications that I didn't know what to do at the time. I have some lingering concerns about the right way to part ways with these items because there were complications when I released the original group of magical items.
